Small Punch

Small punch testing incorporates the use of small discs of material, approximately 8-10mm diameter and 0.5mm thick (final thickness prepared on site). The use of these small test pieces yields several advantages over conventional full scale mechanical test specimens:
• Can be used to characterise limited amounts of expensive materials
• Small samples can be taken from actual components
• Localised material behaviour can be analysed
SMaRT has an extensive bespoke capability up to 900˚C
for small punch creep testing and can carry this out to
the requirements of the European Code of Practice for
Small Punch Creep Testing: Part A 2006 - CEN workshop
agreement CWA15627. In addition, small punch tensile
testing is available and work is underway to develop a
test capability for small punch fatigue testing.
